rod rudinger prieš 7 mėnesius Sherman understood what many military leaders didn't; the "gentlemanly" days of war had ended with the American Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars; if they had ever existed. You could not destroy your enemy, simply by killing the soldiers (pawns). You also had to destroy their will to fight (their morale), and their supplies, and ability to fight. The bottom line in war, is, and always has been; You are doing your damnedest to survive, and kill someone; who is doing his damnedest to survive, and kill you. Sherman was right in pointing out that the South had made a mistake in opting for slavery, and secession because of slavery, and said so: "War is Hell"; and "War is the remedy The South has chosen, and they shall have it; I will give them a "bellyfull" of it. He could have easily been elected President, but turned it down; probably one of the few Americans to do that: " If nominated, I will not accept; if elected, I will not serve." So, that was that. I suspect he wanted to remain in the Army, and did not want to use his being a war hero, to trade for being President, or have anything to do with politics. Other generals since Sherman have made similar statements, George Patton was one of them, and made many, most off-color; which I will not repeat. After the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor, which was not a sneak attack, but was planned to be done in the Ninja tradition; the Japanese Government Officials delivering the ultimatum just before the attack (They had an appointment scheduled with our Secretary of State at 1PM Eastern Time (about dawn Hawaii Time)); with the Americans completely unprepared for an attack, or the wrong kind of attack; Admiral William "Bull" Halsey accurately expressed the American mood: "When we are finished, the only place Japanese will be spoken, is in Hell."

The flow of images and the time dedicated and the kind of verbiage dedicated to confederates felt like a concoction of misleading facts and cloaking the pathetic nightmare of the slaves who suffered unspeakable atrocities. For example: Just imagine if this documentary spoke of that guy working in print about his history of owing slaves before he felt bad for the acre of freshly dug graves. Imagine if this documentary described the confederate generals history in owning slaves and their treatment. They took the time to speak in detail about Sherman going crazy and Grant helping, Sherman being a non-liberal. They also took the time to speak of confederate generals so called valour and other

Jay Harris prieš 3 mėnesius When I was a little girl 1957 (7 years old), I use to sit on the front porch with one of our neighbors an older lady who told me she can from Georgia with her sister and brother in law on a covered wagon. She always talked about General Sherman was gonna come through again and there won't be nothing left. I asked my mother who was General Sherman and she said she didn't know. I found out he was a General in the Civil War. I asked my mom how old was Ms. Gussie our neighbor n my mom said Ms. Gussie didn't know her age. I believe Ms. Gussie my have lived during the Civil War. There was another neighbor was born in slavery and died in 1963. She was 113 years old. Born in South Carolina.

Nemo of Erewhon prieš 1 metus Yes, but what Sherman did to Atlanta and the defenceless people there was cruel and unnecessary. It was unknown at the time for an army to deliberately target civilians. As for banishing the women working in the cloth mill to a possibly slow death of exposure and starvation is, really, a war crime. This conduct of the Federal army laid the foundation for decades of bitterness and even hatred between the Northern states and Southern states; in fact, in some ways, it is not forgotten even now. Expelling the citizens from their homes is indefensible, even in war. Sherman was a moderately clever tactician but a poor human being.

Those who threw it in the trashcan lost. To refer to the States that held to the Constitution as the 'Union' does them a disservice. The rebels sought to form a new constitution. To equate them in any way with the United States of America does a disservice to the Constitution.

rod rudinger prieš 4 mėnesius I have seen the various comments on here, and all it demonstrates is that The Big Lie is still in, and Trumpism, like Fascism, and Nazism before it, is still alive, and well. You cannot discuss, or argue, with ideologues and fanatics; they live in an "alternate universe", where they are right, all the time; get reinforcement from demogogues that reinforce their beliefs; so it is a waste of time, and a fool's errand, to try to present the facts, and change their minds. I guess people in the North, Hollywood, Liberals, Socialists, etc., made all this stuff up; get a life, people.

The difference is, do you read books (I do, by the way, and I could probably run circles around you on military history). You say I need to "crack a book", but you haven't given me the source of your information, that could be a starter. I suspect, though; that you, and your book, are full of it. If you want to reply, go ahead; but I am done listening to you, and I suggest others do the same. In the meantime; read other books, and see other programs, and documentaries; I used to watch one that was by the BBC, called "Battlefield", that was on years ago, and I would recommend it to you, and to others. My knowledge of the Civil War, and History; is good, but could always use improvement. The difference between me, and you, right now; is that I am open to properly proposed counter-evidence. I suggest you do the same.

If you knew anything about Sherman or read my comments you would know that, as implied by the videos title, my comments have nothing to do with Sherman's behavior during the war. Rather, his "march to the sea". If you did you'd realize that the behavior of his men and therefore his responsibility was unforgivable. Unless you condone the murder and rape of women, black and white, the murder and rape of children, black and white. The murder and torture , yes torture, of non combatants, black and white. Looting, burning, and on and on. So, spare me your holier than thou, soap box attempt at a lecture, and acquaint yourself with the facts: it's called reading a book, look into it. And grow a pair, comment under your real name or shut up

Slavery, and the institutions that came after it; Jim Crow, control by terror, and voter suppression, have no place in a civilized South, or America, or anyplace else in the World. Why didn't the South, or the Northern Industrialists, for that matter, treat their workers with more humanity? They had the opportunity. I have heard that the Nazis became interested in the South, and came over here to learn the way the Southerners controlled the blacks, and how to apply it to their country.

VigEuth prieš 6 mėnesius @Bruce Holcomb Um where did Southerners get their property from? Where did they get their slaves from. Pretty sure it was all stolen with violence bro. Get a life. Also how was southern culture destroyed? If the entirety of southern culture depended on the continuance of slavery, then it was right that it was destroyed. But i think a more fair estimation is that southern culture kept trucking along and has been doing it's damndest to maintain it's culture of white supremacy for over 150 years. Any good cultural relics of the south (genteelness, friendliness, hospitality, whatever else they claim) certainly continued on from my experiences with southerners. One COULD argue that losing the war created generations of bitter losers who couldn't get over their defeat and therefore invented romanticized lost cause culture based on imagined motives for going to war and romanization of the "rebel" image, combined with villainization of the Union Army and the Reconstruction Era. One COULD further tie this to the victimhood snowflake culture on the right wing that pervades today, namely the incorrect claim that one's rights are being infringed upon if one is not allowed to discriminate against the groups one wants, or if one is called out publicly for saying truly abhorrent things. Wow, I think I just had an epiphany .... the right wing has been whiny crybaby victim snowflakes since Reconstruction.

ManilaJohn01 prieš 5 mėnesius Sherman did what was necessary to win the war- namely, to break the will of the Confederate states to resist. He largely accomplished Grant's instructions to him in early 1864- which were to defeat Johnston's army, break it up, and then do all the damage that he could to Confederate war resources. Ultimate responsibility however, rests on neither Sherman nor Grant, but on Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis began the war when he ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter if the United States garrison refused to evacuate the fort. He issued this order despite the fact that the fort was United States territory, and that the Confederacy had no legal basis to claim the property. The Confederates would have been far better off if they had played for time to prepare for an almost certain war between the two nations. Instead, they plunged headlong into a conflict which they were completely unprepared for. Harsh though it sounds, the Confederate leadership brought the destruction of much of the Confederacy upon themselves.

joyce horstmann prieš 3 savaites I found out recently that my great-grandfather, Captain William S. Winnett, marched to Atlanta under Sherman and returned home to Ohio unscathed. He died quite young, however, leaving a widow and five sons. I wonder if his wartime experiences cost him unseen physical and emotional damage.

Donnie D prieš 11 mėnesių (redaguota) @sneksnekitsasnek I think most historians agree that the Treaty of Verssailes was a major reason for radicalizing Germany, I wouldn't say Germany was more or less guilty for starting World War One which was really responsible for setting off World War Two. I don't think we have really learnt any lessons in modern times either war does radicalize people and the butchery in the middle east will pay dividends in the future, just like decades of war in Afghanistan yielded September 11. I seem to be one of the few people that is grateful that we have nukes, finally something that has at least kept all the major powers from going into another butchery again but its a limited time-safe, technology marches on.

Because of my studies of the Civil War, I am amazed at although so much has changed, so much of the land, roads and mountains that I see today are in the documentaries from the Civil War that I have watched, especially those by Ken Burns. I really appreciated seeing pictures of the then and now, as it for some reason in my mind validates the reality of what happened years ago. History has always fascinated me. I was born less than a 100-years after the Civil War, which helps bring home the point of just how recent it was. As a military man, it also brings home the point that war should be avoided at all cost, if possible. War is hell. This Civil War was hell on earth. Some of the true carnage will probably lie on a battlefield somewhere, never to be told for our ears to hear.

You'd have thought Sherman burnt down this guys house at midnight for no apparent reason. Did they leave this guy in just to show how some are this mentally fighting this war for slavery?
