Burma Victory has its origins in a project that was conceived in 1944 by Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, head of South-East Asia Command. He desired a full-length film that would tell the story of Allied forces in South-East Asia in World War II. Ultimately this became a film about the Burmese Campaign. Mountbatten's project was complicated by his ambitions. He stated that the film should cover 'all the principal activities of South East Asia Command', adding that 'As such a film will cover Allied troops it should be a joint production – British and American'. Here he faced two problems. First, the US had different military reasons for being in Burma: a wish to reopen the land route to China as opposed to the need to recapture a British colony. Second, they had a specific desire regarding how their actions should be perceived: the US resolutely did not wish to be seen to be supporting Britain's imperial project.

After the Japanese invaded Korea, Manchuria and then China (checkout the rape of Nanking). Japan wanted the raw materials and was a militaristic society. The knew the West was fighting for its life in Europe against the German Nazi and Italian fascists - they thought they could get away with it. This was not a war "against the white man" They treated the people the conquered nations - Korea, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma and even "neutral" Thailand quite horrifically (check out some history). Luckily for those conquered countries, the "white man" with their help were able to win against a pretty evil regime.

Speaking as a former British soldier who has done a good deal of reading on the Burma campaign, and who was lucky enough to meet some British Army veterans of it as a young man, much of the first half of this strikes me as more a American view than a British Army documentary. No lie. It is a toss up if the US General Stillwell hated the British or Japanese more. The Burma Road was a US obsession, because, for reasons best known to themselves, they regarded the Chinese Nationalists as important allies. Mountbatten had a 'loyal' wife sleeping with the anti British Indian Nehru. 'Bill' Slim was a very good general and it was mainly due to him that Britain won the Burma Campaign, only to have Labour's Attlee give it away soon after the war.

I am almost 86 years old. I experienced the whole of the Second World War living in South East England and am very familiar with the events of the European conflict, but this is the first time that I've seen such an in depth documentary of the "Forgotten Army." I stand in awe of the courage and determination of the XIVth Army and the other Nations fighting with them. Not only fighting and beating a brutal and fanatical Japanese army, but also combating the tropical jungles, monsoons and diseases They truly were men of stature and although most of them will now be only a memory to their descendants, in my eyes they are all worthy hero's of History and should be remembered with pride and gratitude. The Kohima Memorial quote is a fitting epitaph to A "Band of Brother's" without equal.

I'm from India n even my grandfather was fighting there in Burma he was a major a platoon commander he achieve many victory under his common,he even got some medal of honor during those period, but,today he is a forgotten hero,even the people had already forgotten about his heroism,everything is gone, it was an Alas! For him n his generation,..........he was fighting for what??????

There was a New Guinea native warrior named ‘ Lik Lik ‘ he went on a one man killing spree after one battle, which he served fearlessly in. They thought that he was lost but, he showed up exhausted and carrying a bag of Japanese heads. He wanted time off to take the heads back a lodge in his village. But, his fellow natives accused him of decapitating the dead and a coward. Lik Lik rebutted with “ no boss they where alive when I killed them “. He had raided a Japanese aid station and killed and decapitated wounded Japanese. He was not the only native to collect Japanese heads, if a knife wasn’t available the head was placed in notch in a tree, the body was twisted around until the head came off. The Japanese soldiers feared being sent to New Guinea, entire platoons would go missing, only to be found dead without they’re heads, the natives took a brutal toll on the Japanese. True story.

My father was an RAMC major in No.5 Army Commando from 1942 onwards. He often talked about the courage and fortitude of the Gurkhas
who always laughed and joked when sometimes severely wounded. He had the astonishing luck, after months of heavy fighting, to win a lottery
ticket home ticket in 1945 and in time to to marry my mother that May in Beattock, Dumfriesshire and also celebrate VE Day. The war was far from over with Japan and he was ready to return when the Americans nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki ending WW2.

My Gramps fought in Burma. He was actually a wireless air-gunner in the RAF, flying in Swordfish torpedo bombers. Thing was, this being the Burma campaign, there was a chronic shortage of replacement aircraft and spares to keep the ones they still had flying so, being trained on an MG (even if it was a completely different model to the ones being used on the ground) he was employed as ad hoc infantry for rather more time than he was flying. He had some bloody rough moments and he didn't talk about it much. The one thing he didn't mind talking about was how much he thought of General Slim. As far as Gramps was concerned, Monty couldn't hold a candle to General Slim. A genuinely outstanding C.O. - definitely a Boss, rather than a Rupert - and a thoroughly decent bloke. My Gramps was a decent bloke, too. There aren't enough like him nowadays.

This is, I am pretty certain The Roy Boulting 1943 Documentary. It has been broadcast several times in the past by various TV Broadcasters. Similar to Desert Victory and Tunisian Victory. Brilliantly filmed by very brave Combat Film Cameramen. The narrator is as usual, perfect for the task. One of the best narrators from those times was the actor, Leo Genn. Not a single " Like " or " You Know " to be heard. Such a refreshing change. Great to see it downloaded here. Well done.

My grandfather was in of 14th army he never really spoke about his time in military service .. other than saying he landed at Singapore got the shit kicked out of them until getting to Indian frontier and ended up working with the Japanese in Vietnam ( Indochina) after fighting them for over 3 years in conditions he couldn't explain or would never want anyone to fight in .. he die just over a month ago.. when I was a kid we would tour the European battlefields go into museums across France to Germany following the British/Canadian advance.. he always annoyed me because he would wanna read everything and every plaque .. I understand more now thank you and miss you my hero never to be forgotten .

My Grandfather was Sgt. Thomas James Myles DCM, 69th Indian Field Ambulance (RAMC). Burma 26th March 1944 he was shot multiple times by snipers, while dealing with severe casualties, including within 5 yards of an enemy held bunker. Every round hit his kit and he was uninjured...
I am so proud, and try to honour his memory, everyday.
I'm sad to say that his DCM was stolen from my parents house in the 1990's... The greatest family treasure, I never had.
Stand easy, Pap... My hero for so many reasons xx

@rnstoo1 Stillwell, like many high up Americans in this conflict, were Anglophobes. Bonner Fellers was another infamous one and his criminal "negligence" that allowed British troop dispositions to be revealed to Rommel in North Africa was utterly despicable. And his punishment? Promotion to MacArthur's right-hand man.

The Burma Campaign seems to be ignored, although it was the largest campaign in Asia against the Japanese in terms of men and equipment. The 14th (Forgotten Army) was the largest Army in WW2 (1.5 million men). I guess this has a lot to do with Hollywood. Thanks for the really good upload. Best documentary I have seen about this campaign.

The old fella crossed the Irrawaddy more than twice. Never said anything about his time in Burma. Except when he was having a bout of malaria. Which was often when I was kid. Other than being in one of the Wiltshire regiments as a radio operator attached to an Indian Division fir a short while we know very little, other than what came out during his bouts of malaria. Just the memory of a man who came back and got on with things and never had a bad word for anyone
