Thus begins a relentless battle between an old man and an enormous fish that may end up being the catch of his life.

I fell in love with the sea, with fishing, and nature in a windowless room during winter in Illinois. Today, I'm in San Jose Del Cabo. I came across this sublime animation and it brought tears to my eyes. I've been coming here for years to fish, to love the sea, to be counted for 8 hours among those men who go out every day breaking their backs to catch fish. They are the noblest people I know. These men can read the mind of the ocean more astutely than most can read their friends. They know how the moon phases will effect the tide and where the fish will be. They know what hue of lure to use based on the most minute changes in the color of the water. They can spot frigates without sunglasses from so far away you couldn't spot them with binoculars. They can tell a wave crest from the dorsal on a marlin in any swell. They can spot flashes of neon green and blue that flicker for an instant and know there is a school of dorado. They know the depths of each point of each ridge around the baja and where to set the lures. They spend time choosing their live baits and handle them tenderly. They know by the way the spinners are jumping if there's a school a tuna nearby. All of these men I have had the pleasure to fish with love what they do. When you go home with your photos of your bag of filleted fish, they spend hours cleaning their boat, refueling, organizing their gear and preparing for tomorrow. They revere the ocean and her bounty. The fisherman of Cabo San Lucas, San Jose Del Cabo, and Los Barilles give so much more than they take. They treat billfish like gods and friends. I've never been with a crew that let one die. They go to war with the yellowfin but they respect them. They let NO FISH go to waste and if the sea is fruitful they give the fish to their family, friends, and their community. Just as in "The Old Man and the Sea" the time eventually comes to gaff the fish and pull it in. They stay calm as a surgeon while holding the leader in one hand and a club in the other while the powerful tail thrashes with enough force to knock any man off the boat, and they strike once on a spot the size of a dime to end their life with as little pain as possible. No great fisherman I know here delights in harming any living creature. They'll spend hours delicately removing line from a wiley bird who thought he could steal another bait. They fish to earn a living and feed their community but most of all they couldn't dream of doing anything else. Of all the charters I've been on, Pisces has the most remarkable fleet. They are all like family but they are also noble competitors. They want the fish more than you. Playa del Sol in Los Barrilles has a boat called the "JulKate" where Luis and Luis will go as hard as you're prepared to go. "The Old Man and the Sea" is not just a story, it's a way of life and so much more. I caught my first Pacific Blue off of Cabo in August and for nearly 2 hours I found the strongest living creature of my life. When the first mate grabbed the leader the giant was alas on the side of the boat. I leaned in to get a closer look and one thrash of his head and he disappeared into the blue. As I sat there with my straw hat, my bleeding palms (using gloves and state of the art gear) I remembered how much this book transformed my life. I suggest that whatever adventure you read about that you connect with, you find a way to live it. You may find what it means to be alive and not as a tourist or a holiday experience but as a human. Whoever created this animation has a powerful gift. It takes every meaningful moment from the book and turns it into a poetic visual meditation. It's a masterpiece in its own right and like all other masterpieces it was inspired by those that proceeded it. Thank you for creating such sublime work. Hemingway, thank you for sharing your wisdom, passion, blood, sweat and daemon with us. I know it wasn't easy but your presence is felt just about everywhere I go. My next blue is for you. I'm sure you're swimming in the fathoms waiting for a worthy fight. I'm sure you'll get the skippy.
