Being a Chinese, I have to read the English translations for the classic Chinese or literal Chinese to understand more quickly. I actually understand the words, but the information is so condensed that I need a long pause to comprehend it.
That's the beauty of literal Chinese when you don't have paper, you must push the conciseness to an absolute limit and save the space. There is no other language that can interpret so much information in 30 characters.

Confucianism cemented the hirarchical structure of East Asia including the relationship between men and women. His concept of the mandat of heaven gave absolute power to the ruler and to male over females. So I would be a bit more cautious about his civility. There are different schools of Confucianism among which the legalistic school has served to supress people for centuries. You could say that after a revival from the cultural revolution confucianism is used now by the Chinese government to indoctrinate and subordinate its citizens.

Confucius was good or great in part at the old time, but Confucius is not great at all now. His words were just some rules and doctrines, criticisms and discriminations , judgments and labeling, there were no common equality, no humanity respect, no individual freedom which are fundamental for modern society. Do believe in Confucius, it's just like a mother tell you what to do and what not to do!such theory is unless in different societies and circumstances. The "sanzi jing "is totally fooling doctrine, trash of Chinese culture.

All those comments written below all are ignorant n very Anti Confucius . WHY ! All because CHINA has a Great teacher , teaching all to be filial piety to their elders including old ages parents .
ALso to their Kings n States n lots more . That's why his Confucius teaching even the Country Amry n States men also followed his teaching till today . Western professors also doing research Why ! all because of Filial Piety towards all human beings n others rather then not respecting others .
please do some research before anti Confucius . Ignorant comments .

@Wandrative there are two countries that alive that are still very Confucius. And I don't mean China. North and South Korea. One embraced communism and one embraced capitalism. Now there are some things that are a little bassackward in Korea due to Confucianism, such as the power of the Chaebol (but the US also embraces rent seeking crony capitalism), but in all, in can be argued that Confucianism helped power the industrial growth of the nation. IMHO.
That being said...if I had to pick one, I'd be Daoist, but I'm kind of a Universalist and I think the divine inspired many teachers.

@James Stevenson probably, but he is correct that many Chinese people don't like Confucius and even 2,000 years ago LaoTzu/Taoism spoke against the strict ridiculous societal rules Confucius recommended. Confucius wanted a boot-licking society where everyone stayed in their place and never questioned authority. He has some good saying, but many seem to have been borrowed from Taoism or other Chinese traditional sayings and are not his own.

Confucius was a military general lnown for his fury. He put to death dozen of people, dancers, dwarves just because they displeased him
None of the confucius teaching date from his lifetime, but were writings during the Han state several hundred years after his death.
The few writings considered from him and his students who were all soldiers speak about war, states, victories ...
Unfortunatly documentaries are for business making money and not to educate people.
