Louis Victor prieš 2 metus (redaguota) Not sure if butcher counts as silent T as much as redundant or the [tʃ] sound having multiple spellings [ch, tch, t]. Add all the other tch words too. The L in almond, calm and palm is regional/optional, not necessarily silent. Salmon too, but that seems rarer. Also d in sandwich (sandwich barely has a pronunciation, every place/everyone says it differently, some with a d, some without, some skip the w, some turn the ch into dge, it is chaos). All the "silent A" sounds are dialectal/preferential/optional (more of short mumbled schwa when voiced), and goes that way for pretty much all other similar words (some adjective of Latin origin that ends in -al being turned into adverb by -ly). That being said, nice job.

The best way to memorize any word in English for writing it in future is to spell this word with all letters it contains. I know its a wrong habit...

You speak Amerenglish and I’ve just listened to you massacre the pronunciation of some English words. Of course you pronounce the t in witch. It is no not pronounced the same as which, which is what you did. English learners, learn from a British English teacher

My native language is Hebrew and even in it I like to break rules. I think the reason I still don't try to break them is because I am not native and I am shy, not very confident to break them, and if I was native I woud be enough confident to break them. One of them is about pronouncing silent letters, many of them are not difficult for me to pronounce at all. However I don't see myself pronouncing silent E's.

Rattytatty prieš 1 metus (redaguota) Lots of the letters that were listed as silent, aren't silent in British English dialects. They might appear silent to non English speakers. There is also a difference between English and American pronunciation. Certainly, where I live, all the words that are listed as have having a silent L such as Almond have the l sounded and would be able to hear the difference between weather and whether. However, American pronunciation is having an influence due to television and films.

KingsleyIII prieš 1 metus (redaguota) I definitely pronounce "almond", "calm", and "palm" with an L. Who doesn't? I also pronounce the D in "sandwich". If a letter may or may not be silent depending on whom you ask, then it's not really silent. It should always be silent, no matter whom you ask.

The correct pronunciation of words which begin with "wh" are pronounced as "hw", e.g., meaning that both letters have a sound. Colloquial American English drops the sound of the "h" and it becomes English of the commoner, not correctly pronounced English. Additionally, the pronunciation examples of "match, watch, witch" are colloquial pronunciation as they most assuredly should have the "t" pronounced.

Some I kind of get it and many I just don’t know why they are reading silent just can’t find the pattern. Is there some way you just can tell and just know that the letter in the words should be read silently?

Karen Kaneshiro prieš 2 metus I listened to some, but not all...was concerned with silent "l"....however, I counted at least 4 times when you actually pronounced the "l", though you listed them as having silent 'l''s.....almond, palm, folk, calm...these words all seemed, to my ear, to have pronounced 'l''s, at least as I heard you say them. Could it be you were reading a list, but falling subconciously into a way of pronouncing the words that you were actually more used to using? Odd.....or did I just imagine I heard the 'l''s as you spoke?
