The quintessence of charming England is the “West Country”: quaint Cotswold villages with their fine churches, manor homes, and gastropubs; Wells, England’s smallest cathedral town; and the New Age capital of Glastonbury, with its legends of the Holy Grail and King Arthur. We'll finish by pondering the dramatic prehistoric stone circles of Stonehenge and Avebury. Steve DL prieš 3 metus That is, I`ll have to admit, true - notwithstanding I`m English ( England having in recent years been ruined by unrelenting over-development ). I remember visiting St. Augustine`s Monastery, Ramsgate, Kent in January 1983. I was woken up in the very early hours of the morning and invited to what I understand was Lauds ( Morning Prayer ). Looking out of my window into the Monastery garden I observed that it was snowing heavily, and a thick blanket of snow weighed down on the evergreens. I heard the chanting of Monks without. The most surprising thing to me was that the journey from my room to the Church was by way of a tunnel under the road between the Monastery Cells and the church, as I followed these black hooded Monks into Lauds. It was all so Medieval like. Then the beauty of the church within.... But then there is mainland Europe, which is altogether far more fascinating a place than England, I reckon. In 1989 I was in the City of Valladolid, NE Spain, staying at what I think was called St. Catherine`s College. A Priest gave us a tour of the place, and led us into an old Library which some workmen had found. They also found some books ( as I suppose they would, it being a Library ). The Priest opened some of the books for us, which were all in printed form. But in many parts the printed words had been crossed out and in their place was the hand-written remarks and `corrections` of The Order of Preachers. Ie, the hand written `corrections` of The Spanish Inquisition. It shoved history - alive and kicking- right into my face. I wouldn`t want to live anywhere else but in Europe. This is where both the old world died and the new one was conceived.
