Lviv or Lwów are two names for the same city that was known as Lemberg until 1919. The Poles considered it as one of their most important cultural and political centers, the Ukrainians too. And so, in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the question of who would control this city led to conflict: The Polish-Ukrainian War.

@Sigillum Militum against Lithuania you waged aggressive war, thus it dows not count. And with Czechs you only fought for one city. Thus it also cant be considered equal to Ukrainian situation. Poland only got freedom because of luck and that bolsheviks had to deal with Ukraine and were far away.

@The Great War - Thank you for clarifying which languages' names you use for cities and regions. The situation at the time there in Poland, two Ukraines, and two Russias - all overlapping - seems to me to rival that of the Balkans in its complexity and intensity. Add the Slovaks and Romanians, and "witches' cauldron" seems like an appropriate adjective!

Austrian sources in this video claims that it was mostly all fine when they ruled the territory but there's not mentioned that it was austrians who boiled atmosphere between polish and ukrainians for 100years of their rules and nowhere else among ukrainians was this much hatered towards poles than in previously austrian ruled lands ... divide et impera

The city of Lwow has very strong Polish roots just like Vilnus. I actually have an Ukrainian friend who is from Lwow who speaks fluent Polish because he grew up there (though he cannot write or read in Polish which I only found out later when he emailed me and it turned out he was writing in Ukrainian and using google translate to translate his messages). There is a level of complexity of Polish-Ukrainian relationship which this video didn't delve into, but overall it was an accurate description of the actual conflict.

Shortly afterwards, Piłsudski entered into an agreement with Petlura and both of them set off to Kiev against the Bolsheviks and took the city. However, from the north, the Bolsheviks struck and broke the front, and then Lviv was defended by a squadron of American pilots - Cooper commanded it - later the creator of the movie King-Kong! Polish Soviet Relations 1919 1921 ( Croll) : “The mistaken Soviet decision in July 1920 to cross the ethnographic border to forcefully sovietise Poland, in opposition to Marxist doctrine, irreversibly altered the complexion of the war and proved its pivotal turning point. This culminated politically with the short-lived establishment of the Provisional Revolutionary Committee in Białystok, and militarily, with the decisive defeat of the Red Army at the Battle of Warsaw. It is now certain that the Red Army offensive into Poland in July 1920 aimed not only at the sovietisation of Poland, but at spreading the socialist revolution to Western Europe and overthrowing the Versailles settlement. The European revolutionary upsurge had largely extinguished during the previous year and in August 1920, Communist ideology ultimately failed to inspire the vast majority of the Polish population. Thus, by utilising the Soviet military to secure its war aims, Lenin and the Politburo inadvertently signed the death-warrant of socialist revolution in Poland at the beginning of the twentieth century. “ ... Splitting the nation in half is not a great idea, you know?! The current war in Ukraine isn't even a civil war. its led by Russian officers, was started by Russian troops and is fueled by Russian propaganda.
Its only natural that different issues and policies can sometimes divide people. Look at Brexit (52% vs 48%), US polarisation, European nationalist rise... It's not a reason to fight.
What happened in Ukraine was a protest against corruption, which created a power vacuum. Russia took advantage of it as our true "brother".

These peoples also got on well mostly during the period of the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth for centuries. After WW1 the Poles wanted a reinstated great Polish state while the Ukrainians saw the chance of independence. By the way, my Polish grandfather fought in that war and the later Polish and Soviet War. It took the end of WW11 and developments after 1989 for the Polish and Ukrainian border disputes to be finally agreed.

At first i want to say, that there wasn't murders is civilians and army prisoners while was the fighting in Lviv. There are many photographs together with ukranian and polish soldiers. Very gentleman conflict at the beginning.
Then, Ukraine had their independency since 1648, i don't know how it calls in English, in ukranian it sounds Гетьманщина, or Військо Запорозьке.

Siamese forces aka the rmy of Thailand occupying Germany. Now THAT was news to me. And it's pne of those few countries, which the Europeans never conquered. Thoug by the uniforms, it seems they were mostöy allied with France, their neighbour in Indochina. Who were also occupying Rheinland. With the late 1919's and early 20's, it was not a wonder that by -33 Hitler had his plans full on advancing. There really was hardly a year when Europe didn't find beiween the World Wars. Let alone what Japan was doing.

You forgot to say, that Pilsudski and Petlura were frieds and allies...Pilsudski wanted to create a free Ukraine State...but not such (like those Westukrainians) which wanted to kill all Poles and take their territory. Also forgotten was the Ukrainian King Vasyl Vyshiwanyj who tried to create the Ukrainian Kingdom marching from the south. He was a member of Habsburg Family...filling Ukrainian just to be a king, and hating all Poles. It was said, that he was late to participate in fighting of Lwów, because was egar to demolish all possible in the Polish cities in the south (Moldowa and South Ukraine) so he came to late to have his "Kingdom".

I don't think Pilsudski and Petlura were friends. It was rather situative allience 'cuz Petlura knew and Pilsudski understood what Bolshevism can bring. Regarding Vasyl Vishyvany, or his ture name was Wilhelm Habsburg, archeduke of Austry-Hungary. So, firstly, he had never tried to set up Ukrainian Kingdom, though there were some Ukrainian army leaders who were offering that. Secondly, regarding ethnic cleansings in Lviv, can you provide any sources?

I'm Polish and I don't think I have ever heard of the war in history classes. As a history buff I was aware of the conflict taking place before watching this video, but there was just so much stuff going on at that time around Poland alone (fight for independence, Uprisings in Greater Poland and Silesia, war with Bolsheviks, Lithuanians, Ukrainians...) that I never really looked into this particular war in detail. Thanks for that very informative video.

Also. French supported Poland only because thanks to Bolsheviks who decided to not pay back French loans given to Russian Empire and force-nationalised french investments in Russia.
That was the key factor for the French to support Poland. They din't wanted strong ally. If they were they wouldn't oppose Poland territorial claims in the east.
They just wanted someone to win their money back.
Just like England acknowledged independence of Greece only because Greeks get loans from English banks.

The vacuum is created by the alliance of the west after world war I ,made a pack with liberalism. A number one allied Wilson had the Soviet Red Russia to expend Bolsevism in the East European countries. Five hundred thousand conscript left Italian front capitulate in 1918, by 1919 they were out of their uniforms no arms,packed the main train station in Budapest,by Ten thousand solders a daily.Quickly, the bolsevicks moved into the Hungarian mainland with the lead Lenin Boys Bela Kun.When the rampant September revolution was under way almost everything was in bolsevicks hand with a help from the galecian mob(Bassarabia) whom by the thousands came and to leave in Hungary from Ukraine. Years after Horthy Miklos Royal Admiral of the Hungarian Navy kicked the now Communist (bolsevicks),they left back to Russian the Hungarian army consolidated but lost the second world war! Program by Wilson's industrialist expention made tremendes atrocities to the population Hungarians never suffered anything before and after in the Twentieth century.The big boys in Washington DC. never really learned the Lord's prayer,had a pack with the devil's advocate getting the German Kiezer and the Astro-hungary dominance nullified. Wars made bigger wars .Now, clearly seeing the end game as total distraction of the world by the rich and the powerful forces of evil.
