Instead of stereotypes, real people emerge from this tale ostensibly of a nun's search for repayment of a debt, which will then be used to pay for traditional prayers for her Abbess, who has just died. But, as in a hero's journey, or a tale of spiritual awakening, the nun fulfills a debt owed by the abbess to a young nun previously under her care, who ran away from the abbess's harsh discipline, and was lost to an unhappy life of vice. The nun recognizes that the abbess's true intent was to save her from the glittering yet empty world of Samsara, and after learning of the tragic outcomes of women who'd run away looking for love, or an escape from their families, develops true renunciation with the determination to devote her life to Buddhist Practice.

All character roles have their best efforts to make a such classic movie about the arts and culture of the BUDDHIST SOCIETY away from the modern World. Hats off to the director for splendid job. The resolution came a touch quick, however, and although I sense Ani Karma found what she was looking for, I am puzzled by the photo revelation. Was this the catholic nun, Tashi's love, the future head nun??? I suspect the middle one, alas near the swift paced ending the sub titles on YT were blank a few times. Nevertheless, a breathtaking film with heartfelt mystery and goodness.

Saru Thapa Officially prieš 6 mėnesius I respect all the religion as well as people but i was so passionated in buddhism when i was in my teen age .i do believe in karma and one of my friend Tnangshi ghale used to taught me about kindness,humanity and the power of god ..i always admire her words which belongs a lot in buddhism..anyway perfect movie .thank you for this movie..nuns are so natural..they act so simply,realastic and wonderful job..

Such a joy to watch such a simple and powerful movie/message at the same time about the right action when we connect with our True Selves. I just wanted to ask what does Ani Karma say at 1hr 40 min (just before the end of the film) for her reasons not to want to be Chief Reciter. Unfortunately, this bit was not subtitled and I would have liked to know her answer although on a subliminal level I know what the answer is. Namaste

I appreciated the film also by reading the subtitles - as I am from a different language. I was disappointed that the final dialogue by Karma was not translated into sub-titles [when she was asked why she did'nt want to be the Chief Reciter]. I think it must be an extremely significant one.

I have been Buddhist for over 40 years and have stayed in Nuns' monasteries in Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, and China, and visited many more in Thailand, Mongolia and Tibet. This movie captures monastic life so well. This film also captures the difficulties of modern life...and the incredible choices young women must make. If this was 50 years ago, there would have been no roads, no buses, and nearly all of the nuns would have been illiterate. Few if any would ever go more than a mile or two from their village and certainly not alone! Partly because monastic law forbids it and partly because a rural woman would not have the courage to go forth among strangers. Now young women in the Himalayan kingdoms can read, can travel and can make their own decisions. So while the young nun, Ani Karma, broke some minor monastic rules and allowed herself to be vulnerable to the point of danger, her good heart and mind kept her on a good path. The producer and director and actors all did a marvelous job of portraying how Buddhism is now at a crossroads -- helping suffering people in daily life and not just inner cultivation. Many nuns' monasteries in South and Southeast Asia are now helping young girls and orphans find better lives by being sanctuaries of peace, education, health and vision. Saddhu! Saddhu! Saddhu!

I even wrote a book called "The End of Karma" where I describe the story in Katmandu, Pokhara, Jomsom all way through the caves in Mustang. But I never have been in Jomsom or Mustang, just Katmandu, Pokhara and valley to see the Annapurna. I described Jomsom and Mustang all from my researches. My dream was to go there someday. And I just did this incredible journey through this movie! I am crying of joy!

And my respect and appreciation to Karma to bring life in that charecter, it was magnificent, her performance was really heartwarming and delightful and thanks all of you to let us know insight story of ani and monk life its really enlightened my soul, thank you so much

Jianwei Wang prieš 4 mėnesius (redaguota) The last bit of film alludes to the reason why deseased Ani lent money to Yashi: newphew of the Deseased Ani ran away from monastery to southern city and was trapped into prostitution. Ani gave money to Tashi to find the nephew and rescue others. Tashi was in love with the Nephew but she would not return with the mountain village with Tashi because of her prostitution past. Tashi is a changed man doing good to help orphanage and prostitutes. Karma realized this money was not lent to Tashi, but given as a grant. Tashi has spent the money on good intentions. Maybe a wrong guess

Yesh Prabhu prieš 1 mėnesį What a wonderful movie. Deeply touching. At the end of the movie, I was drowned in sorrow. I felt terribly sad, I do not know why. It touched me that Ani Karma resolved to go on a retreat. Going on retreat means facing much hardship, so much hardship that it feels like torment. Buddhist nuns are so very special people, kind hearted and compassionate. I might watch the movie again. Thank you very much for uploading this video. Now I need to think and ponder as never before, and think about the meaning and purpose of life. Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania

Studio 94 prieš 6 mėnesius I was not expecting this. One of the best movie to come out of Nepali Film Industry in my opinion. What boggles me is the fact that they made movie of such caliber 15 years ago and it went downhill from that. We need to support good filmmakers and make Nepali Film Industry stand out. I’m a Nepali and I’d like to associate myself as a cinephile having been exposed to world cinema and this is type of stuff that makes me proud and aspire me to follow my passion to become a filmmaker. I haven’t watched many Nepali films and most movies I have watched were disappointing and hopeless to say but once in a while movie such as this one right here and Pashupati Prasad gives me hope. The movie was shot beautifully by that I mean world class, definitely work of an expert. Amazing performances by the actors, I wonder how many of them were professionals!! Filmmaker definitely knows what he/she is doing, can easily tell its a work of well versed filmmaker. Great reference to one of the most iconic scene from Taxi driver, amazingly done, I loved director’s take on it. Storytelling at its best, completely original and has a mass appeal to it. You could be from anywhere in this world and there is something for you to take away. It brings into our attention social issues like Untouchability, girl trafficking and subtle racism which many movies shies away from addressing. If we keep on making movies like this Oscars is not very far. 9/10, there’s always room for improvement.

Nikesh Mrjn prieš 6 mėnesius (redaguota) I think this movie shows us how Karma works: Example 1 (Runaway Ani): The runaway Ani actually ran away from the nunnery, thus disrespecting it; only to fall in the hands of girl trafickers who sold them to some brothel. Now, she is trapped into a situation from where she can't come out even if she wants to. Example 2 ( the Head Ani): The runaway ani ran away from the nunnery due strict and sometimes harsh treatment from the Head Ani (sorry I dont know the correct term). The Head Ani felt guilty about it and resorted to Tashi, gave him the money 2 lakhs to bring her back. That money was required after her death to perform prayers which would help her reincarnate. Example 3 (Tashi): Tashi was a smuggler of goods and sometimes girls. He was told to bring back runaway ani because he knew the trafficking business well. When he met the runaway Ani, he deeply fell in love with her. He wanted her to leave prostitution and live the rest of with him, but she refused due to which he was deeply filled with sorrow. He used to sell girls, but now he is deeply sorrowed because of a sold girl.
