The republican party's goal to stop was the spread of slavery to the new territories as the nation pushed westward. Slavery was never really a reason for the north for the most part, until thousands of dead racked up and all for what? To keep the south in the union, lincoln needed a cause that would make the deaths of so many seem worth it. A lot of people in the north did give a care either way about slavery and like the south didnt think of blacks as people much either.

J McKenzie prieš 7 metus I believe that the reason that the southern states where "not allowed" to leave the union as it was never really an option. It was argued that the founders of the country would not have waged war and shed blood in order to form a country that is allowed to tear itself apart based on perceived slights to honor, etc. One is hard pressed to find documentation within in any of the orders of succession that highlights this apparent "taxation" reason.

It also showed that iron clad warships would destroy wooden vessels - yes I know the French and British had some, but this war showed their potency. Yet, 55 years later, in 1914, men charged en mass into withering gunfire. Was nothing learned?

Mike M prieš 4 metus As a student of American history (albeit a 58 year old one and a Canadian) let me say the War between the States ("Civil War" was a Northern abstraction) defined The American soldier from then on. North and South men ( fighting in WW1 and WW2) fought as they were told their fathers and grandfathers fought. Not shown but told. Stories from 1861 -1865 informed their outlook toward war, as seen in their combat behaviour (outstanding) and their isolationism (heartfelt and seared) during the interegnum. If you want to learn about American's attitude toward one another and the world look to the soldiers who survived the holocaust of 1861-65. Canada became a country in 1867, one with a strong Federal government - a lesson from the war.

O'Rorke's men were part of the men that Warren managed to redirect to the defense of little round top just as the confederates were starting their assault. The 140th had just come to the summit of the hill when the colonel lept off his horse and drew his sword, yelling "This way, lads... Follow me". O'Rorke was shot through the neck as he led his men in a charge down the western slope of the hill. The charge of the one fortieth halted the rebel assault from that quarter. The brave irishman from Rochester, New York was as much a hero as Chamberlain or Vincent that day.l

Why do people have to make out that something is being faked or someone is being dishonest about anything ? How about this likely scenario .... The soldier first gets photographed where he died in the Den. He has to be buried for sanitary reasons though, so his body gets moved out of all those rocks to a more suitable area, or to a spot where it will be picked up and moved to a gravesite/ditch/whatever for burial and it gets photographed again. How it gets labeled at printing time may be the real problem. Maybe the printer just didn't pay attention to the list close enough when doing the labeling, leading to accusations against the photographer ! Or maybe someone received the picture unlabeled and mistook it for a picture from somewhere else and labeled it as such for their book/article/whatever. For people who claim to be historians and investigators etc... , they do a real half assed job when it comes to looking into things like this, and we end up with videos that repeat their half assed "findings". The explanation could be SOOO simple, but they always have to find a way to shit all over someone's reputation first instead of that ! I expect better - MUCH BETTER ! Keeping track of such things is a lot easier in the computer age and it's easier to find errors. Back then it was a lot harder to find faults like that until they had already been out in print for a long time and someone finally noticed it and pointed it out. Battle of Pickett's Mill (our family place). It is said that there was some animosity towards George Pickett from Marse Robert Lee which lead to the snafu which is called "Pickett's Charge". No matter the particulars, it was a nasty little operation. A valiant attempt to bring the fight to the doorstep of our Norn' neighbors, give'em a taste of their own medicine. Perhaps a bit to ambitious though on our part. Is what it is. In light of the poxy rigumaroll that is being directed towards our valiant Rebel brethren these days at the hands of so many ignorant victims of historical inaccuracies and PC social conditioning, I do hope that our memorial sites and symbols of heritage (on both sides!) can withstand the insolence and ignorant displays of disrespect which are being directed at us and illegally slapped upon us as of late, as they are all American combat veterans. This means funding be provided by your govt. and our beloved SCV/DOC organizations and our honorable yankee civillian counterparts toboot. So long as we continue to exist, we will make history and so long as we make history, it will repeat itself, therefore, lessons are to be learned. Great Grandpa Enright's unit was issued the Colts, some turned them in for Sharps rifles, but GGGP Enright liked the Colt so much he kept his, and consequently I inherited it 126 years later, and I'm VERY glad, because I have never liked the Sharps, since it's a single shot weapon!!!

Nils Skudaarkaat prieš 6 metus FYI: Devil's Den was named after "Old Devil", 22 foot long Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake that made his home here for many years. He was sighted often, killing small animals for food, and in the summer of 1874, his body was found half out in then open, and he was identified and buried among ":His" rocks. His story can be seen and heard in the cyclorama and at the visitor's center.

oldmal60 prieš 7 metus Yes I was there and checked it out. He posted fake dead and another they picked up a real dead soldier and placed him. To his left was the wheat field were 100s lay dead. But he arrived after the battle and did not know it. On the 4th it was very hot and there was a hurry to bury the dead. Union first, 140 wagon loads. Rebels were put 70-130 in a hole. Some were piled up, coved with lantern carosine and burned to be buried later. It was a smell issue, not disrespect. God bless them.

You are viewing Devil's Den and The Wheat Field and this whole spot. It's hard to imagine so many men "fitting" here and fighting, complete confusion. God Bless all of these men, on both sides
