I resumed viewing. I am bowing out after a few minutes of Ribbentrop with Stalin. Leaden stagecraft. Pardon me as I slink out my seat and exit the theatre. The "Fall of Eagles" a British drama that follows the collapse of Hohenzollern Germany, Hapsburg Austria-Hungary and the Romanovs made around the same time was a triumph compared to this. Sometimes low budgets are palpable.

I am trying to recall how far along gay rights and pride were in 1989, but this cast is quite a collection of then closeted gay men of the London stage. That's not said to be demeaning at all. Just a different bit of unintended social history running alongside a "stagey" script. Early in the pandemic I watched the two Herman Wouk "War and Remembrance" "Winds of War" mini-series that had my parents' full attention at the time. I stuck it out in spite of Robert Mitcham's refusal to "act". Mitch was very public about his contempt for acting. In any case "Winds of War" covers the same territory better, albeit through the eyes of an American in Europe

England and France could have mobilized while Germany went eastward. When Germany committed most of its forces to the inevitable war with Russia, England and France could wait until they are almost at Moscow to Declare war on Germany if they wanted to, better odds for success, assuming they launch a major offensive into Germany.

The crimes and cruelties committed against my sons and daughters, my fathers and mothers, my brothers and sisters hurt me deeply, regardless their ethnicity and nationality. In Isaiah 2: 4, Jehovah God, the Creator and Source of life, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, promises: "He will be judge among the nations and will settle matters in relation to many peoples. They will turn their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. The nations will no longer raise their swords against each other and learn no more to wage war." Supposedly, it was to give time to evacuate its people on the frontier....but surely French intelligence and reconnaissance would have shown that the entire bulk of Hitler's army was on the eastern frontier with Poland and that there was therefore no immediate threat of German invasion?

Apart from Hitler and the German's, I had to wait until the script revealed who was who. I also found Ian McKellen's portrayal of Hitler's character as a bit too posh.

fliegeroh prieš 8 mėnesius This movie is great watching if you are very familiar with the diplomatic events that led to WWII. If not, you might have to watch it more than once. The acting was superb and Ian McKellen portrays Hitler with a good understanding of the man. This is a real gem of a movie. When you think of the untold suffering, misery, destruction and death that was unleashed by the decisions of these men, the mind can barely comprehend what terrible mistakes were made. They don't make movies like these anymore. Today, it's all battle scenes and CGI.
