I asked why, as we weren't "in it" yet. He stated "they don't mention that WE depth Charged that submarine off Iceland some days before so he was retaliating. The Niblack stopped to pickup survivors, not knowing they were in the sights of the U Boat. The U Boat commander decided that they were doing a humanitarian thing so he wouldn't sink them also. Eric Topp, WW2 U Boat ACE went on to become an Admiral in the post War German Navy.
